Koh Dengshan capitalised on his familiarity with the Raffles Country Club's Palm course by taking the lead on the opening day of the Boustead Golf Open.

The Raffles pro shot a flawless seven-under 65, buoyed by seven birdies, to take a one-shot lead over the battle-hardened Lam Chih Bing in the SPGA Golf Series event.

The 26-year-old, who turned pro three years ago, seemed to have blitzed the field in the first nine (starting from the 10th hole) with five birdies for a 31.

His two other birdies came on the third and fifth holes.

Said Koh: "I had a great start, kept the momentum and enjoyed the great outing. I'm hitting the ball well and hope to keep it going for the next two days."

Lam, however, upstaged Koh on the front nine with seven birdies, a par and bogey for an impeccable 30.

But he played the second nine in regulation 36, cancelling out one bogey with a birdie.

Two shots behind Lam is the Singapore-based Australian Unho Park who carded identical 34s for a 68.

Former Singapore international Dino Kwek and Alan Chang share the lead in the senior section with 75s.
