Golf: Singapore seniors claim Asean title

Senior golfers did Singapore proud by winning the 30th ASEAN Senior Amateur Championship in Yogjakarta, indonesia.

For only the fifth time in its 30- year history, the Singapore Senior Golfers Society (SSGS) team (left) beat home-town favourites indonesia and third-placed Malaysia in the Gross Stroke team event recently.

At the picturesque highland courses of Merapi Golf and Mountain Resort (slope rating 137) and Borobodur international Golf and Country Club (slope rating 131), the Singapore team came through the three-day battle either tying or holding the lead outright at the end of each day.

the team of david Soh (handicap index 8), Lian Ai Hian (4), Paul Kwek (7) and Yeap Chee Leong (9) won the tournament with a total of 721 shots.

indonesia finished second with 730 with Malaysia claiming third spot with 744.

Other highlights for Singapore were a hole-in-one by CS Kong on the 16th hole of the Merapi Course, dicky tan winning the best net title, Francis Lee finishing 1st runner up in Group A (55-59 years), and Raymond tan emerging 1st runner-up in Group d (70-74 years).

SSGS captain terence ng said: "We selected our team two months before the tournament to give them ample time to ready themselves both mentally and physically. they turned out to be excellent golfers."

SSGS will host next year's event at the Singapore island Country Club from Aug 18 to 20.
