Joseph Schooling beats Michael Phelps in 100m butterfly

SINGAPORE - National swimmer Joseph Schooling has won the men's 100m butterfly event at the Longhorns Elite Invite meet in Austin, Texas, on Saturday morning (Friday evening US time).

According to local media reports, the 20-year-old clocked a timing of 51.58 seconds, just 0.07sec ahead of record-breaking Olympian Michael Phelps' timing of 51.65sec.

Schooling's University of Texas team-mate Jack Conger came in third with 51.72sec.

The Singapore swimmer's timing was behind his personal best of 50.96sec. Phelps is still the record holder for the event, with a timing of 49.82sec which he clocked in 2009.

Schooling will be competing in the 200m butterfly on Sunday (June 5).
