Meeting Sania and Bopanna

Students from Global Indian International School (GIIS) were thrilled at the chance to play against Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna when the tennis stars arrived at the Queenstown campus on Dec 3.

The tennis stars were invited by the school to conduct a tennis clinic for over 35 students from GIIS campuses in Singapore and Malaysia, and to speak at the GIIS Leadership Lecture Series.

Sania is ranked World No. 27 in singles and 5th in doubles, while Bopanna is currently ranked World No. 17 in doubles and has been a member of the Indian Davis Cup team since 2002.

The tennis clinic saw selected students play rallies against the tennis stars who provided tips and corrected their playing style. The lecture was held before a live audience of over 700 students in GIIS Singapore, but also included students from Malaysia, Japan and India via a live video-conference.

Sania's message was particularly memorable, as she told the students: "Don't let anyone tell you that you can't do anything. If you believe in yourself, and your parents support you, you can conquer the world!"

The GIIS Leadership Lecture Series has been graced by various eminent personalities over the years such as former Indian president Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, former cricketer and sports legend Sachin Tendulkar, Nobel Laureate Professor Richard Ernst; former Reserve Bank of India governor Dr D. Subbarao and Bollywood father-son duo Rakesh and Hrithik Roshan.
