New canoeing programme launched

Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong (left) soaked in some fun yesterday when he officially started the Para Canoeing development programme at MacRitchie Reservoir in a canoe with Nuriyah Sim Liwan.

The programme was launched by the Singapore Canoe Federation, in partnership with the Asian Women's Welfare Association's TEACH ME Services and the SportCares foundation.

It aims to extend canoeing to the wider community by offering the physically disabled an additional avenue for rehabilitation through participating in the sport on a regular basis.

Carried out on Saturday mornings, the programme began a 10-week pilot run in May, and will begin the new intake next Saturday. The initiative is led and run by about 30 volunteers, some of whom are national canoeists.
