North West Brisk Walk Expedition Finale is on this Sunday

Around 350 regular North West Brisk Walking Clubs members, together with Guest-of-Honour Dr Teo Ho Pin, are expected to gather for the North West Brisk Walk Expedition Finale, a 5km brisk walk trip starting at the Road Safety Park at East Coast, on Sunday Sep 14, 2014.

1 in 3 of these regular brisk walkers is from the Pioneer Generation.

Organised by North West Community Development Council (CDC), the North West Brisk Walk Expedition is a series of 10 walks (each walk being 5km) that brings brisk walkers to different areas of Singapore such as Punggol End, Japanese Gardens and the Southern Ridges.

The participants of the North West Brisk Walk Expedition are the regular brisk walkers of the North West Brisk Walking Clubs.

To be considered as a finisher of the expedition, the participant needs to complete at least 8 out of the 10 walks in the series. There are a total of 10 walks in the expedition series, and members will complete the 10 routes within 10 months, totalling 50km as part of the North West Brisk Walk Expedition.

Upon completion, a certificate and a finisher t-shirt will be presented to the participant.

Mayor of North West District, Dr Teo Ho Pin says, "Back in 2011, we spearheaded the North West 100km Brisk Walk Challenge to improve the fitness levels of participants through more rigorous walks. Having received positive feedback from the members, we introduced the North West Brisk Walk Expedition, a series of 10 routes of varying terrain totalling 50km to once again challenge the fitness levels of the regular brisk walkers. The first walk began in November last year, and today culminates the finale of the North West Brisk Walk Expedition series. We hope that the North West Brisk Walking Clubs members have enjoyed the brisk walking marathons organised over the years, and we will be looking at bringing more exciting walks to the members in the future."

Mdm Tay Siew Keow, a Pioneer Generation of aged 67, is an avid fan of the brisk walking challenges organised by North West CDC.

A participant of the North West 100km Brisk Walk Challenge and the North West Brisk Walk Expedition which require participants to walk for 100 km and 50km respectively, she says, "I love going on all these brisk walk challenges, as I think that it is a good self challenge, especially for people of my age. When I knew about the 50km North West Brisk Walk Expedition, I decided to sign up for it as I had such a good experience going for the North West 100km Brisk Walk Challenge. Furthermore, the expedition is a great chance for me to explore the Singapore sights. One of the expedition trips took us to the Singapore River, and we passed by Clifford Pier, the place where I grew up in. I felt very nostalgic going back there again. I remembered that back in the 60s, the place was full of hawkers selling satays. But now, gone are the satays and in place are all the high rise buildings. So much has changed in Singapore over the years, and I will not have a chance to know that if not for the North West Brisk Walk Expedition."

The North West Brisk Walk Expedition Finale is part of the North West Healthy Living Festival, the first-ever 7-week long festival happening in the North West District from Aug 17 to Oct 4. The festival showcases the five healthy lifestyle pillars, youth sports and healthy living courses/activities. A total of 15 themes and 100 programmes are featured throughout the 7 weeks.
