Over 7,000 attend Malaysia’s largest zumba event

GEORGE TOWN: About 7,140 people worked off tens of thousands of calories yesterday when they gathered at the Esplanade here for a 90-minute Zumba session.

The event left a mark in the Malaysia Book of Records: It was the largest Zumba event in the country.

Watsons spent over a month building the crowd.

Every customer at its 22 outlets in Penang were invited to the event dubbed "Move Your Body".

"I shop at Watsons frequently and last month they invited me several times till I finally said yes. No regrets! I can feel my body get a good workout," said assistant company secretary Loke See Mun, 24.

"Ninety minutes is super exhausting! I zumba a lot but this is my first time at a major event and I'm so happy I managed to dance to the end," said regular zumba dancer Anivac Lim, 27.

But dancing was not the only joy. Being a leading health and beauty products retailer, Watsons and its partner brands also prepared an awesome goodie bag for all.

Everyone received a red bag filled with health drinks, moisturisers, deodorant, mouthwash, wet tissues, contact lens cleaners, foot-and-heel balm, facial cream samples, snacks and energy bars.

Twenty health and fitness brands also set up sampling counters. They gave out samples of the latest health and beauty products such as snacks and health food, vitamin supplements, soothing muscle patches, resistive exercise bands, cereals and even collagen drinks.

"We used up more than 2,000 paper cups in less than an hour for people to try our electrolyte sports drink. It's great to see so many active people in Penang," said Horleys sports nutrition distributor Choong Kum Wah.

Sanctband sales and marketing manager Darren Wee and his team gave every visitor free exercise bands. This unique and wide strip of elastic band is used to add muscle resistance to zumba or aerobics movements.

"We are glad to join this event. Penangites generally tend to be an extrovert people and this is a good event to market fitness products," he said.

Watsons Malaysia managing director Kulvinder Birring was possibly the happiest zumba dancer of the lot.

"We are known to be the champion in spearheading innovative campaigns to drive Malaysians towards an active lifestyle.

"The right health regime will keep problems like obesity and diabetes out of our population," he said, adding that he was impressed that so many Penangites gathered from as early as 6am to join in.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng launched the event, reminding the participants to keep to a healthy lifestlye.
