Quincy Quek, Lam Zhiqun and Choo Tze Huang relived the battles of their amateur days when they claimed the top three positions in the first round of the $70,000 Goodpack/Singapore Professional Golfers Association President's Cup at Warren Tuesday.
Quek and Lam shared the perch on two-under 69, while Choo finished a lone third on 70 on the challenging and narrow layout at Choa Chu Kang in the final event on the SPGA calendar. Quek, who finished a reasonable 20th at last week's Resorts World Manila Asian Tour event, birdied the second, eighth and 13th holes and suffered a bogey on the 12th.
Lam had a stuttering start with a bogey on the third hole to shoot one over on the way out. But he returned home with a bang, stringing birdies on the 10th, 15th and 17th holes.
Singapore's top pro Mardan Mamat is joint-fourth on 71, with Peter Ang.
