But what apprentice Troy See did on Sunday left his girlfriend of five years moved and teary eyed.
His novel marriage proposal in front of a huge Kranji crowd at the parade ring before Race 3 on Sunday took Liang Pei Wen by complete surprise.
"I felt really surreal," said the 23-year-old, who does weddings and corporate events for a hotel.
"Too good to be true.
"I didn't expect it to come so early. I thought it will be next year, when both of us are more settled.
"I was kind of speechless and literally shaking.
"I didn't expect it. I thought it would be something more low profile. I didn't expect it to be so big."
Moved to tears?
"I guess," she said, shyly.
"I was very happy when he won the race...double happiness."
