No Fandi Ahmad, no V Sundramoorthy, no problem.

Even without their two biggest stars, the Singapore veterans were able to seal a 1-0 victory over their Selangor FA counterparts at the Shah Alam Stadium last night.

A header by Rafi Ali in the 16th minute proved decisive in the curtain raiser of this year's Sultan of Selangor's Cup.

Fandi, who starred in last year's edition and scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory, had commitments with his football academy in Singapore, while LionsXII coach Sundram had a Malaysia Cup quarter-final clash with ATM FA at the Jalan Besar Stadium to negotiate.

The Singapore team, led by Malek Awab, dominated the 40-minute match from the start.

But the Selangor veterans, captained by the legendary Soh Chin Aun, were not about to be pushovers in their own backyard.
