S-League: Eight-point lead not enough

(Wednesday, 7.30pm, Clementi Stadium)

The two best sides in Singapore will go head-to-head at the Clementi Stadium on Wednesday in a clash that could decide the eventual destination of the Great Eastern-Yeo's S-League title.

Even though the S-League's new 2.5-round format will add five more games to their fixture lists, Tampines Rovers and Albirex Niigata will be looking to gain a crucial advantage in the final stretch of the season.

While the Stags hold an eight-point lead over their second-placed rivals with a game in hand, Tampines coach Tay Peng Kee wants his side to extend the gap even further.

He said: "I think it will be an exciting game and probably a title-decider as well. A win for us is important.

"In the half-round, we will be playing with the top-six teams, so the half-round is definitely going to be very tough and we are trying to get as many points as we can get to cushion ourselves.

"Even though people tell me Tampines have an eight-point lead, I don't think it's enough because if you lose two games, it's down to two."

For Albirex coach Koichi Sugiyama, a win will provide the White Swans with a springboard as they pursue a double.

When asked if a win would give his side a psychological edge, the former Urawa Red Diamonds defender said: "Yes, we still have S-League and StarHub League Cup games.
