School sports: Catholic High sink favourites

Over the last two years, teams from Catholic High School have narrowly missed making the semi-finals of the Boys' National B Division Floorball Championships.

This year's outfit were determined not to suffer the same fate, and their fire and determination, mixed with obvious talent, ensured they went all the way, beating favourites Victoria School (VS) 4-2 at Yishun Sports Hall yesterday to take the title.

Catholic High captain Tan Yan Zhi, 16, credited the win to his team's strong self-belief and never-say-die attitude.

Speaking to The New Paper after the match, he said: "VS are really strong, but we knew we could do it even though we were 1-0 down.

"I'm very proud of my team's fighting spirit."

Ali Mohd Noor - he scored both of Victoria's goals - had opened the scoring early, but the Catholic High side kept their cool and duly responded with a goal by Geoffrey Kok and a Gabriel Chan hat-trick to seal the victory.

In the girls' tournament, East Spring Secondary School edged out Springfield Secondary 3-2 to lift the title.

Winning captain, Syarifah Nadirah, 15, said: "We take every game seriously, and today was no different. We just wanted to play our best."

Springfield skipper Eka Fateha rued her team's missed chances, but was pleased with the team's overall results this season. "We didn't even qualify for the second round last year," she said.

"I'm glad we accomplished our goal of reaching the top two."
