S'pore struggle without star trio

Without strike terrors Fandi Ahmad, V Sundramoorthy and Abbas Saad, it was always going to be tough for the Singapore side to repeat last year's run to the final at the IG Masters 6's at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Heroes of the 1994 Malaysia Cup-winning Dream Team - Fandi (bruised rib) and Abbas (personal reasons) - could not commit to playing, while Sundram appeared courtside but didn't see any action on Sunday due to a knee injury.

There was no denying the Singapore team lacked stardust without last year's stars. Former Dutch international striker Pierre van Hooijdonk, who bagged the tournament's top-scorer award for the second year running, asked: "Where's Fandi? I miss him!"

While the Singapore team suffered heavy defeats to tournament finalists Liverpool (5-0) and an EPL All-Stars side (5-2), they salvaged some pride with a 5-4 win over Manchester United.

Tampines Rovers' 43-year-old striker Aleksandar Duric (two), Rafi Ali, Lim Tong Hai and Dalis Supait were on target in that match.
