S'pore teen Mahathir gets Boavista extension

After a successful five-month stint with Boavista's Under-17 side, Singaporean teenager Mahathir Azeman will return home on Monday with a one-year extension secured - this time with the reserve squad of the Brazilian side's professional team.

The 17-year-old midfielder has made the No. 10 shirt in the Boavista Under-17 squad his own, even shouldering penalty-taking duties. He will return to Singapore to sit for the O-level examinations starting this month.

His one-year deal starts in January next year.

Mahathir made his name with Dejan Gluscevic's Lion City Cup squad, who were losing finalists last year, and continued to impress at the Rio-based club, where he became the first Asian player to don their colours.

The Siglap Secondary School student arrives at 3pm on Monday on Emirates flight EK354.
