ST Run returns to Hub on Sept 27

ST Run returns to Hub on Sept 27
More than 21,000 people took part in last year's inaugural ST Run at the Hub (above).

You have seen South-east Asia's best athletes make their mark in the National Stadium at the SEA Games. Now, you too can enjoy the thrill of crossing the finishing line at the same venue.

The Straits Times Run is back at the Hub for a second year and promises to be as memorable as last year's edition, where participants were the first to finish a run under the stadium's iconic domed roof.

Said Straits Times editor Warren Fernandez: "You have seen the athletes breaking records, winning medals, or enjoyed the spectacular opening and closing ceremonies at the recent SEA Games. Now, you too can have your own memorable moment as you finish your run in the stadium.

"For many of those who took part last year, this was a highlight, and an inspiration to keep going till the finishing line."

The run, backed by Panasonic for the third year in a row, will be held on Sept 27, a Sunday.

Mr Tan Ooi Boon, the deputy head of Singapore Press Holdings' marketing division, said: "We are extremely grateful to Panasonic Singapore, Sports Hub and all our run partners for their support in turning ST Run into one of Singapore's best events.

"Expect more fun and excitement as we strive to create more activities, contests and giveaways as we celebrate SG50 as well as ST's 170th anniversary."

The second ST Run at the Hub will reprise highlights from last year - and usher in new ones. One example is the introduction of an 18.45km category to mark ST's 170th anniversary this year.

The national daily broadsheet was established on July 15, 1845.

The new category will replace the 21km run from previous editions. The ST Run will also feature a 10km route and a 5km fun run. Runners in the 18.45km and 10km categories can expect to enjoy much of last year's scenic routes, passing by landmarks such as the Singapore Flyer, Marina Barrage and Gardens by the Bay, before ending at the stadium.

This is the third time that ST is organising a run. In 2013, the ST Run at the Park, held at the Punggol Waterway Park, drew 12,000 participants. Last year's inaugural ST Run at the Hub saw more than 21,000 people taking part.

Organising committee chairman Marc Lim said: "The National Stadium was the source of so much excitement and joy during the SEA Games that, when it came to selecting a venue for this year's run, there was only one place we had in mind.

"We saw examples of great athletic feats during the Games, and I am sure it will be no different in September. You might not win a medal or break a national record, but just ending in such an iconic venue will spur many on to do their personal bests."
