THE SEA Games might be dominating headlines now but a host of activities lie in wait at the Singapore Sports Hub after the biennial meet ends on June 16.
They include the Asian Fencing Championships from June 25-30, the Barclays Asia Trophy on July 15 and 18, as well as a concert featuring Korean boyband BigBang on July 18 and 19.
All these are part of the Hub's Opening Season, a seven-week period filled with community and world-class events to inaugurate the facility's one-year milestone.
The Opening Season culminates in a Youth Celebrate event on July 26. It will be attended by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and will also mark the official opening of the Hub.
Yesterday, Mr Lawrence Wong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, was on hand to launch the Opening Season.
He sealed two items in a time capsule at the launch ceremony.
The first was a special edition SEA Games gold medal plaque with a quote from Singapore's first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew that read: "Sports must occupy a large place in our national activities... Every citizen must keep himself fit if he wants to lead an effective life."
The second was a book depicting the birth of the Hub.
The time capsule will be commissioned by PM Lee at the Youth! Celebrate event on July 26.
Mr Wong also thanked the Hub's partners, saying: "In the short time since the Sports Hub opened its doors to the public last June, it has hosted over 100 sporting and lifestyle events.
"It has also become home to many athletes who now train here regularly.
"More importantly, it has become a popular destination for Singaporeans to watch and play sports with their friends and families."
