PETALING JAYA - World No. 12 Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong produced an amazing effort for one of the biggest wins in their careers after dumping world No. 3 Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen of Denmark in the first round of the China Open at Shanghai on Wednesday.
The pair who had sneaked into contention for the Super Series Finals following a semi-final showing at the French Open, were just too much for the second seeded Danes, winning 25-23, 21-15.
Thien How-Wee Kiong who are currently ninth in the Super Series standings should have done enough to seal their spot, especially since closest rivals, Indonesia's Angga Pratama-Ryan Agung Saputra were bundled out in the first round by England's Chris Adcock-Andrew Ellis.
The pair however need to stay focused as they will face South Korea's Ko Sung-hyun-Shin Baek-cheol in the second round.
Top men's pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong also progressed without too much difficulty, beating Dutch duo Ruud Bosch-Koen Ridder 21-16, 21-18.
The world No. 5 will go on to meet Russia's Vladimir Ivanov-Ivan Sozonov for a place in the quarter-finals.
