Despite the scorching sun beating down on them, the 2,500-spectator crowd stayed glued to the competition ground of ELITE 2015 (www.elitesgfittest) at the outdoor space of Bugis Junction to cheer on the participants.

50 male and female participants were put through a test of strength limits in this second stage of the multi-round inaugural fitness competition that aims to find the fittest in Singapore.

Trainer Dylan Goddard, 28, dominated the Men's Open throughout all three events to take the win.

He squatted a total of 6,160kg (112 reps of 55kg) in five minutes for the Squat Challenge, pulled a personal best deadlift of 250kg in the Deadlift Max Ladder and pressed 2,280kg in the Strict Press.

"The events were well thought through and executed by the organisers, as it took a lot more strategy than most athletes would have anticipated. The series has been more challenging than I previously thought and I look forward to the Grand Finals!" he said.

Goddard will be proceeding to the Grand Finals on 18 October, as part of the Overall Top 10 men who earned their spot after going through two grueling rounds.

The first round was held on 19 April at the same venue and participants went through two events of metabolic conditioning.

In the Women's Open, army officer Chew Feng Yi topped the ELITE category although she is still recovering from a knee surgery two weeks back.

Clocking 182 reps of 20kg in the Squat Challenge, she did a 140kg deadlift and then managed a 1,100kg total for the Strict Press.

After the Power segment concluded, an ELITE Olympic Weightlifting Meet was held in the late afternoon, attracting an even larger crowd who stayed to watch participants try to best their Snatch and Clean & Jerk.

Each participant only gets three attempts and they take turns individually to do it.

Winner of the Men's >180kg, John Cheah, hit a personal best of 238kg - 106kg Snatch and 132kg Clean & Jerk - and gained tremendous support from the audience.

"I was pretty tired after the Power segment, but I got into the groove quick and the crowd definitely helped because it's quite a vulnerable feeling to lift in front of so many people," the 24-year-old undergraduate said.
