WEST HAM 1 (Carlton Cole 46)
ARSENAL 3 (Theo Walcott 68, 71, Lukas Podolski 79)
After three games without a win, Arsenal desperately needed a victory to rejuvenate their title bid.
A trip to Upton Park, where West Ham had scored only eight times all season, appeared to be something of a Christmas present, but the Gunners struggled with the wrapping paper.
Having gone a goal down early in the second half, Arsenal were indebted to a calamitous goalkeeping error from West Ham's Adrian.
Theo Walcott's shot, so weak it could have been caught in a paper hat, passed straight through the Spaniard's hands and rolled into the net.
Moments later, Walcott doubled his haul with a close-range header from a Lukas Podolski cross. Podolski, just back from a long-term lay-off, put the game beyond doubt with 11 minutes to go, a deserved reward for his instant impact.
