10 fun places to visit In North Singapore

Whenever I think of Northern Singapore, only names such as "Northpoint" or "Woodlands Checkpoint" would automatically pop up in my head. If you, like me, think that there's nothing fancy to do in the Northern region of our sunny island, eat your words!

In this article, GET.com features 10 fun places in North Singapore that you can explore. Yes, you may start blocking out your calendar to pay some of these places a visit.

1. Sembawang Hot Spring

Tucked away in the Northern tip of Singapore sits Sembawang Hot Spring, the one and only natural hot spring on mainland Singapore.

Why should you pay a visit?

Rumour has it that the water from this hot spring has inexplicable healing properties due to its relatively high sulphide content.

The exact source of the hot spring is still unknown but this rustic hot spring attracts flocks of people despite the pungent smell. Indulge in a free foot bath therapy by soaking your feet in pails of hot spring water.

If you fancy a jacuzzi-esque experience and you happen to be rather thick-skinned, you could lie on the ground and let the water shoot out onto your back.

Just remember to bring a change of clothes to avoid going home soaking wet!

Address: Gambas Avenue between Woodlands Avenue 12 and Sembawang Road

2. Qian Hu Fish Farm

If you are thinking of rearing fish but have no idea where to start, here's a good place to visit.

You can gather professional advice on all things regarding fish, watch the diverse species of tropical fish or get your aquarium supplies here, on top of escaping from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Also, getting there is easy even if you don't drive. There is a complimentary shuttle bus service to and from Choa Chu Kang Bus Interchange! Should you rather have their staff walk you through their fish farm, guided tours are available although those won't be complimentary.

Address: 71 Jalan Lekar Singapore 698950

Opening hours: Monday-Friday & eve of public holiday: 9:00am - 6:00pm Saturday-Sunday & public holiday: 9:00am - 7:00pm

3. The Animal Resort

The Animal Resort is a marvellous spot to spend a relaxing day. It is here that you get to experience the old-school charm of interacting with animals that roam around freely - something that the Gen Y's and Z's have probably never done before.

The Animal Resort aims to provide each child and his/her family the opportunity to be acquainted with laid back kampong vibes and animals up close and personal.

Even though the compound isn't massive, it has adequate space to house animals such as peacocks, geese, birds and fish.

Booking is not required if you're visiting in a small group. They also sell small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs (subject to availability), pet food and accessories!

Address: 81 Seletar West Farmway 5 Singapore 798061

Opening hours: 10:00am - 6:00pm daily (except eve of CNY & CNY)

4. Yishun Dam

Yishun Dam is one secluded spot that attracts many fishing and biking enthusiasts. It is a casual, quiet place where people can fish, hone their photography skills, chill under the stars, or just relax. The scenery is especially beautiful when dusk falls!

It makes of an ideal place to ponder and reflect if you are ever going to be seeking one. Yishun Dam is largely accessible only by car or bike. Turn on your GPS if you aren't familiar with the area.

How to get there: Along Yishun Avenue 1

5. Woodlands Waterfront Park

The Woodlands Waterfront Park is home to the longest jetty in Singapore. It is a scenic and tranquil coastal park that is friendly to people of all ages as there's a multi-generational playground for the young and old. This makes it extremely convenient for families to plan a day out in the sun.

Its magnificent view of the sea from the North is a favourite among residents and visitors young and old. The 1.5 kilometre-long waterfront promenade is an ideal spot for recreational activities. Dedicated jogging and cycling tracks with varying intensities are also fitted at the Woodlands Waterfront Park to cater to exercise buffs!

Address: Admiralty Road West

How to get there: Bus Service 856 from Yishun Interchange or Woodlands Interchange

Park lighting hours: 7:00pm - 7:00am

6. Kranji War Memorial

Just as its name suggests, Kranji War Memorial is a hillside cemetery that honours the men and women from Commonwealth who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty during World War II.

Situated deep within a quiet neighbourhood, Kranji War Memorial is solemn and beautiful at the same time. Thousands of white gravestones line up neatly in rows on the cemetery's gentle slope. The memorial, on the other hand, bears the names of more than 24,000 allied soldiers and airmen killed in Southeast Asia with no known graves.

As it is a place that honours the dead who've sacrificed their lives during the harsh Japanese Occupation, it is not a place for young children to be making a scene. Rather, it is a good place for older children to be exposed to Singapore's war history.

Address: 9 Woodlands Road Singapore 738656

Opening hours: 8:00am - 6:30pm daily

7. Senoko Fishery Port

This is definitely a place that many wouldn't even consider visiting on a regular night. It is not for the faint-hearted and is atypical for a date. This is it if you want something out of this world.

The smell is going to be overwhelming, the jostling is going to be intense, and you probably have to wade through sloshy market flooring and bin your trusty flip flops after your adventure there.

I can only imagine how exciting it'll be to glimpse into the world of our local seafood supply chain up close behind the scenes before your favourite black pepper crabs or salted egg prawns are laid out in front of you on the dining table.

Note: Senoko Fishery Port is about an 8-minute drive from the nearest MRT station at Admiralty. Do not park at the entrance and obstruct their way, though.

Address: 31 Attap Valley Road Singapore 759908

Opening hours: Tuesday-Sunday: 2:00am - 6:00am Closed on Monday (Psst, this is why you should never eat seafood on Mondays!)

8. Bollywood Veggies

Bollywood Veggies is a unique, laid-back vegetable farm located in the Northwest Kranji Countryside. It is a fantastic place to visit should you be needing some rejuvenation.

The farm is open for both independent and guided tours, although guided tours would probably cost you some money. For those who'd rather explore independently, fret not as there are self-guided maps to supplement your relaxing walk around the 10-acre farm.

Besides the selection of vegetables at Bollywood Veggies, the farm also houses birds, fish, frogs, cats and dogs. A quick search on the internet is enough to convince me to visit as soon as possible - reviewers rave that the owners and staff are very friendly and the food they dish out using organically-grown produce is absolutely palatable and healthy altogether!

Note: If you're intending to have your dinner there, do pop by earlier as they close at 6.30pm. Cash only.

Address: 100 Neo Tiew Road Singapore 719026

Opening hours: Wednesday-Friday: 9:30am - 6:30pm Saturday, Sunday, Public holidays: 8:00am-6:30pm *Closed on Monday-Tuesdays, except public holidays *Closed for a fortnight each year for Chinese New Year

9. Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park

Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park has seen some major transformations over the years as it was a place my brother and I frequented when we were young. There weren't food options like McDonald's and Grub way back then. I digress, but the mentaiko fries at Grub are worth the calories.

Anyhow, this park is a family-friendly one that even houses a frequently-used dog run! There is an inline skates rental outlet in the park as well for those who'd like to skate.

The old concrete canal has been naturalized into a stunning 3-kilometre-long meandering river with lush banks of wildflowers.

Feel free to make yourself comfortable in the park, but remember that fishing is not allowed in the river! For your own safety, cycling on the bridges is highly discouraged.

Address: Along Bishan Road and Ang Mo Kio Ave 1 Singapore 569981

Park lighting hours: 7:00pm - 7:00am daily

Dog Run: 7.:00pm - 10:00pm daily

10. Khatib Bongsu Park Connector

This scenic stretch set in the relatively unspoiled lower reaches of Sungei Khatib Bongsu is teeming with biodiversity, mangroves and flatlands. Its still ambience attracts nature lovers, fishing enthusiasts, joggers, cyclists and birdwatchers alike.

If jogging and cycling are too mainstream for you, try paddling through the calm waters in the company of lush greenery and chirpy birds! You can do that if you join ad-hoc kayaking groups such as the Singapore Adventurous & Nature Lovers.

Address: Khatib Bongsu Park Connector starts at Yishun Ave 1/ Yishun Ave 2 and runs along Yishun Central and Yishun Ring Road before ending at Yishun Ave 6.
