Emirates Group expands operations on the ground, too

DUBAI - The Emirates Group-owned supplier of aviation services, dnata, is steadily diversifying and expanding operations.

The United Arab Emirates-based company, which provides a variety of ground handling services to 22 airports around the world, acquired a majority stake in British cruise agent Imagine Cruising on March 9.

Dnata, which acquired two British travel agencies in 2014, is the world's fourth-largest combined air services provider. It says it is now the biggest long-distance travel service company in the UK.

In a bid to quench an ever-increasing global thirst for travel, dnata plans to strengthen its travel business, including expanding the channel for sales of Emirates' air tickets.

Dnata has invested as much as 545 million dirham (S$203.3 million) in acquisitions and facility development. The company makes about 40 per cent of its sales from ground handling services such as aircraft towing, cabin cleaning, luggage handling, ticketing and check-in services.
