Lienchiang County this year hosted a series of activities to welcome a special period known as "Blue Tears".

Blue Tears is a scenic phenomenon involving red tides, which are caused by the glow of local dinoflagellate, known commonly as Sea Sparkle.

Dongyin Island, know for having the largest display of Blue Tears, was voted one of the ten must-go islands in Taiwan on Yahoo Travel.

According to local officials, the phenomenon was also designated one of the fifteen wonders of natural scenery by CNN.

"In order to promote the scenic landscape created by the phenomenon of Blue Tears to tourists," an official of the Lienchiang County said, "the county has invested a large amount of resources to promote the natural wonder, such as merchandizing, holding a photography competition and promoting three-day, two-night travel deals with a special price."
