SINGAPORE - The 165m-high Singapore Flyer has soared to the number one spot on TripAdvisor's Travellers' Choice Landmarks in Singapore, beating popular attractions like Marina Bay Sands Skypark and Merlion Park.

This marks a positive milestone in its bumpy history since it opened in April 2008.

Shortly after its launch, the wheel was shut down for a month after it broke down in December 2008. According to reports, passengers were left stranded for close to six hours in its cabins.

After the incident, the company was sued by a group of 14 business owners for losses incurred during the breakdown, reported The Straits Times.

In May 2013, it faced possibility of bankruptcy and was placed under receivership by its main lender.

The Straits Times said that the main lender is a bank which has taken action because it is owed money by the wheel's operator, Singapore Flyer Pte Ltd.

After a year being placed on receivership, the Flyer was sold to Straco Corporation, Singapore a tourism company, for $140 million in 2014.

Costing $240 million to build, the Singapore Flyer has 28 air-conditioned capsules which can accommodate 28 passengers.

When it was launched, the Flyer was the world's tallest ferris wheel in 2008 but the title has since been taken over by the High Roller in Las Vegas in 2014.

In the TripAdvisor's Traveller's Choice Landmarks in Singapore, the list comprises of popular places of worship and some solemn sites.

Marina Bay Sands Skypark and the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum in Chinatown came in second and third places, respectively.
