US site ranks Singapore as best street food city in the world

Believe it or not, an American lifestyle site has named Singapore as the number one street food city in the world, with Bangkok coming in at second place.

Calling street food "the true fuel of the people", Thrillist.com, part of a New York-based lifestyle digital media group, sought reviews from seasoned travellers and researched on cultural food traditions to come up with this ranking.

While six of the countries in the list are from Asia, popular Asian cities known for their street food cuisines are noticeably missing from this ranking.

Taipei and Hong Kong, which are known for their bustling night markets and distinctive street foods, did not make an appearance in the list.

Malaysia, which boasts a strong food culture in cities like Malacca, Penang, Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur, also did not snag a spot.

The ranking spanned across the continents such as Europe, South America and the Middle East, and also highlighted popular street food items in that city.

More known for its fine dining, London managed to enter the top 10, clinching the last spot.

With its influx of immigrants, Thrillist.com said the British capital adopted the various food cultures and localised them with homegrown produce. Their food truck culture features stalls from almost every nation, attracting packed crowds from tourists and locals alike.

Another capital in the ranking is Iceland's Reykjavik. The city may not have a variety of street food to offer compared to London, but it just relies on one "secret weapon".

The hot dogs there are apparently so delicious, Thrillist.com said it is the only food item you need to eat in Reykjavik and ranked the city as number 13 on the list.
