Bicycle pump used in sterilisation op in Odisha
Doctors attend to a woman, who underwent a sterilization surgery at a government mass sterilisation "camp", at CIMS hospital in Bilaspur district.

The Odisha Human Rights Commission and India's health ministry have sought a detailed report from the state health and family welfare department and the chief district medical officer after learning that a community health centre (CHC) in Angul used a bicycle pump to inflate women's abdomens during sterilisation operations.

The commission wants to know why the pump was used for the mass operation in place of carbon dioxide, whether there was any mechanism to measure the intra-abdominal pressure, whether there was any means to ascertain if the air used for distension of the stomach was free from bacteria and whether the CHC was equipped with the necessary support system to handle any emergency.
