Make good use of stress

SINGAPORE - Do you feel tired easily, get body aches and headaches, as well as insomnia? These are warning signs that a person could be suffering from stress, said senior psychologist Adrian Lau.

Even those who are strong-minded and able to push themselves mentally need to be wary when they spot the warning signs, said Mr Lau, who will be speaking about how to manage stress on Saturday, from 10am to 1pm, at a My Paper Advance seminar.

"Their body will show them they need to slow down and take a break... having prolonged stress can lead to mental illnesses," he added.

Mr Lau, who has been practising at Mount Elizabeth Hospital for 14 years, said that coping with stress involves having a healthy lifestyle, a wide social circle and a good sense of humour.

"They will help you see the positive side of things," he explained.

Drawing on his experiences from treating patients as young as upper-primary school pupils to senior citizens, Mr Lau said that hobbies are a good way to take one's mind off worries.

Besides speaking about the effects of stress at the Advance seminar, he will talk about how stress can be turned around for a person's benefit.

The seminar will be held at Ngee Ann Kongsi Auditorium at the Singapore Management University. Other topics to be covered include heart health issues, tips on managing one's finances and mapping out personal life goals.

There is a registration fee of $10. Light refreshments will be served at the seminar. Visit pbp.sph.com.sg/mpadv for registration details and more information. Attendees also stand a chance to win an iPad mini in a lucky draw.
