KUANTAN - An unemployed man is in despair after his mother was killed in a road accident, days before she was to donate him her kidney.
Chew Yong Shin, 26, who is suffering from kidney failure, said this had been the wish of his mother Lee Yook Yen, 52, adding that she was supposed to undergo a final test before surgery.
"I have been suffering from kidney failure in both my organs for two years. My mother had wanted to give me one of her kidneys so that I could at least go on living normally.
"My mother had undergone multiple tests to ensure her compatibility and fitness for surgery. She was supposed to go through one final test soon before the transplant could be performed," said Chew, who is unemployed due to his health condition.
Lee, an accounts clerk, died on the spot after a car collided with the motorcycle she was riding at Jalan Haji Ahmad here on May 3.
Now, Chew is facing the uncertainty of ever receiving a donor kidney after he was told by hospital authorities that a harvest of his mother's kidney was not possible as her blood had stopped flowing to the vital organ after the accident.
"She was a warm and friendly person. She got along well with everybody and her wish was for me to get her kidney," he said when met at his home here, where he lives with his 63-year-old retired father and younger brother, 21.
National Transplant Resource Centre head Datin Dr Lela Yasmin Mansor said only those who had died from brain death in such a case could have their organs harvested for donation.
Chew's name as an organ recipient, said Dr Lela, would have to be returned to the waiting list.
"The mother could have donated her kidney as a living donor but it is unfortunate that she died before that. However, her tissues could still have been saved for donation," she said.
"There are time frames for the organ transplants to be performed after removal.
"For heart and lungs, it is four to six hours. For the liver, it is within eight to 12 hours while the kidneys can last up to 24 hours.
"Meanwhile, corneas can last for two weeks while bones, heart valves and skin can be stored for years after being processed and frozen," she said.
