Needy girl gets help from needy boy

GEORGE TOWN - The family of S. Mogeshwaran, a Year Two pupil suffering from a rare congenital condition called Hirschsprung's disease, has given away RM10,000 (S$3,900) in excess donated funds to help cerebral palsy girl S. Polin Raj.

Polin, who can only walk on her toes on her left leg, cannot speak or move her left wrist and fingers.

The five-year old girl is scheduled to undergo surgery at the Recoup Neuro Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation Centre in Bangalore, India, on Wednesday.

Her mother Mary Magdalene, 29, thanked Mogeshwaran's family, the Penang Hindu Association (PHA) and the public for donating to their daughter's surgery.

"My husband Stephen Raj and I will accompany Polin. We will be there for four months,'' she said.

The couple has another daughter, aged two.

Mary said the trip including the surgery would cost about RM35,000.

"We managed to raise only RM27,500, which includes the RM10,000 from Mogeshwaran's family, a RM4,000 donation from the St Annes Church and RM1,000 from the Society of St Vincent de Paul," she said.

Mogeshwaran had a successful operation on Oct 25 at the Penang Adventist Hospital and is scheduled to undergo two more in the next few months.

He was born with Hirschsprung's disease, a condition that affects the large intestine and results from missing nerve cells in the colon muscles.

His mother R. Thanaletchumi, 40, thanked the Penang Adventist Hospital, Prof Dr Thameem Ansari and donors for their help.

"With RM38,000 in sponsorship from Penang Adventist Hospital and generous donations from the public, we had an excess of RM10,000.

"We feel the pain of Polin Raj's family because we went through it. We know how hard it is if we don't have the money to save a child," she said before handing over a banker's cheque to Mary at the Derma Sivasanta Clinic in River Road on Friday.

She said people from all over the country and even from Singapore and Brunei had come forward to help the family after her son's plight was highlighted in The Star on Oct 23.

PHA deputy president P. Murugiah urged those who wish to help Polin to bank their donations into her Maybank savings account No: 107321025533 or by cheque payable to Polin Raj and send to the PHA office at 9-3-1 Bukit Awana Condo, Jalan Bukit Kukus, Paya Terubong, 11060 Penang.
