A new community hospital in Outram will be ready by 2020 to serve nearby residents, especially those in nearby Bukit Merah, an ageing estate with many senior citizens.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the new 550-bed hospital was attended today by Health Minister Gan Kim Yong and Senior Minister of State for Health Amy Khor.

It was reported in February this year that the hospital will be built at the site of the former School of Nursing of the Singapore General Hospital (SGH).

Aiming to enhance recovery for patients, the new hospital will cater to sub-acute patients mainly and palliative care patients.

Patients from acute wards at SGH will be sent to the community hospital for further care and rehabilitation before they are discharged.

It will also boast a dialysis facility for the convenience of hospital patients and those living nearby.
