KUALA TERENGGANU - The neurosurgery unit of Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ), which was established in April 2011, has conducted 1,343 brain and spinal cord operations as at December last year.
HSNZ director Dr Abdul Rahim Abdullah said of the total, 284 operations were carried out in 2011, 542 in 2012 and 517 were conducted last year.
"The neurosurgery unit is the first set up by the Health Ministry in the East Coast to cater to patients in Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan," he said after a media briefing here yesterday.
"HSNZ has successfully become the referral centre for various cases of brain and spinal cord injuries previously handled by Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital in Kubang Kerian," he added.
The briefing was presented by HSNZ neurosurgeon Dr Nujaimin Udin.
Dr Abdul Rahim said HSNZ had also applied to the Health Ministry for an additional neurosurgery specialist and six medical officers.
"This is in line with HSNZ's projection of conducting 600 surgeries each year." - Bernama
