Among the world's top 50 in Engineering and Computer Science; improved ranking for Economics/Business, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences & Mathematics and Physics

SINGAPORE - The National University of Singapore (NUS) has been placed 111th among the world's universities in the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by the Centre for World-Class Universities (CWCU) at Shanghai Jiaotong University in China.

NUS, which has risen 23 places from its 134th placing in 2013, remains within the 101-150 band of more than 1,200 universities ranked by ARWU every year. The University has also been placed among the top 50 in the field of Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences, as well as in the subject of Computer Science.

ARWU uses six indicators to rank world universities: the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; the number of Highly Cited Researchers; the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science; the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index; and per capita performance with respect to the size of an institution. ARWU lists the best 500 of the 1,200 universities it ranks every year.

This year, NUS has moved up in the list of top 200 universities in the Broad Subject Fields as well as the selected Subject Fields under the ARWU.

NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan said, "We are pleased that NUS is rated among the best universities in the world and continuing to make strong progress in research. It is particularly heartening that NUS is ranked 16th in the world for Engineering/Technology & Computer Sciences, and that we continue to make significant impact in Economics/Business, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences & Mathematics and Physics. "

"I am grateful for the excellent work and dedicated efforts by NUS academics and researchers, which continue to be recognised globally. We have a strong pipeline of highly competitive research faculty and groups in a growing number of areas, which will enable us to increase our translational impact in Singapore, Asia and beyond," Prof Tan added.
