Potential leaders must possess fire to serve

Selecting the next generation of leaders to take Singapore forward is a gigantic task.

The criteria set for the selection of candidates cannot be too high - or not many will qualify - but the criteria cannot be too low, either.

Good qualifications, an analytical mind and excellent public-speaking skills are important, so potential ministerial candidates can command respect and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with foreign dignitaries.

Character and integrity are equally important.

Above all, candidates must have the fire burning in their bellies to ensure the survival and continued progress of Singapore.

They should have the innate love and desire to serve the country, be able to identify with the people, particularly heartlanders, and mix freely with them on the ground.

They are expected to keep in touch with their constituents constantly, and should be able to comprehend the people's difficulties, problems and aspirations.

Prior to an election, Singaporeans have to do a little introspection.

They have to think very seriously about which party they are voting for, as their vote would decide their fate and the fates of their children and grandchildren.

One of the reasons Singapore managed to become a First World nation within a short period of time is that it has been ruled by the same party all that time.

This enabled the Government to successfully implement long-term plans and policies.

This would not have been possible if the government changed at every election.

Singaporeans should give the Government our fullest support.

With our support and encouragement, the Government will be motivated to perform its job even better.

We all need positive encouragement for a job well done. The Government is no exception.
