KOTA BARU, MALAYSIA: Kelantan will block access to online dating, crime-related and pornography websites when it launches its free Internet wireless service.
State Information committee chairman Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan (PAS-Temangan) said the wi-fi service was available in parts of the state capital on a trial run basis.
"The state will not rush into making it available throughout Kelantan because it wants to select an operator that can guarantee that web content that promotes social ills and negative values will be filtered out.
"We want everybody to have equal access but we must control some of the content," Dr Mohamed Fadzli said when wrapping up the tabling of the 2009 Budget at the seven-day state legislative assembly sitting.
State Infrastructure committee chairman Mej (R) Md Anizam Ab Rahman said the federal government had an ulterior motive when dealing with Kelantan.
"Despite numerous appeals, the federal government has denied Kelantan the right to have a port and a supply base for oil and gas activities in the Joint-Development Area, which is just 170km away from our shores.
"This does not make any sense as the nearest port is Kuantan in Pahang, some five hours' drive away while the supply base is in Kemaman, Terengganu, when it should be in Kelantan, which is near the oil and gas installations," said Mej (R) Anizam.
Later, State Speaker Muhd Nassuruddin Daud adjourned the sitting sine-die. --THE STAR
