IN THE fight between organic fruit and doubters everywhere, organic fruit are winning. At least, to some extent, say researchers, who published a detailed comparison between organic and conventional strawberries from 13 pairs of neighbouring farms in Watsonville, California.

The organic strawberries had higher concentrations of antioxidants and vitamin C, and survived longer without rotting.

Taste testers clearly preferred the organic version of Diamante strawberries, one of three varieties tested, said the study, published in journal PLoS One.

But other scientists noted that the organic strawberries contained significantly less of dietary minerals potassium and phosphorus, which are no less important than antioxidants, said the LA Times.
