MS NORAZIRAH Ajis loved the colour pink so much that her husband bought her a pink helmet as a surprise early this month.

On Monday, that helmet lay on the Corporation Road flyover, cracked into two parts, and metres from her body.

The 25-year-old student was flung off her 38-year-old husband's bike at about 3pm on Monday after a collision with a car on the Pan-Island Expressway.

A police spokesman said the driver, a man in his late 50s, has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

It is believed the couple had been travelling on the right lane when the car struck them from behind. Ms Norazirah was riding pillion and the couple was believed to have been heading back to their Yew Tee home, said her 18-year-old nephew who wanted to be known as Muhammad.

The crash left Ms Norazirah with serious head injuries and she was pronounced dead at 3.20pm.

Her husband escaped with abrasions.

As it began to drizzle, a motorist who drove past the accident scene reported seeing Ms Norazirah's grief-stricken husband on his knees next to her body.

He was later taken to the National University Hospital where he was being kept under observation yesterday evening.

Husband and wife were to have celebrated their second wedding anniversary in December.

It is not known if there were any passengers in the car.

The driver was also taken to NUH where he was treated for minor injuries. He has been discharged.

National safety council president Tan Jin Thong said it was 'very odd' to hear of a helmet breaking into two pieces.

He said: 'A helmet has to conform to certain standards. Those that are approved will not break so easily.'
