IT TOOK a little over an hour to raise a total of $15,775.30 at the Shell One-Litre Charity Challenge on Friday.

Four teams of two drivers each, driving from Infusion in Dempsey Road to the Jurong West Shell station and back, logged a total of 157.752km. For each kilometre they logged on one litre of petrol, the company would donate $100 to The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund.

Shell had aimed to raise $20,000, but made up the shortfall with an additional $4,224.80. Kah Motors donated $5,000 to take the total sum to $25,000.

The winning team - 91.3FM personality Boy Thunder and marketing manager Julian Wan - notched up a total of 41.104km.

The challenge, which emphasised distance over speed, required the 1.8-litre Honda Civics to travel from Dempsey Road along the Pan-Island Expressway to Jurong West and back.

Drivers included former Nominated MP Eunice Olsen, who is also Shell's FuelSave Ambassador.

Despite the heavy traffic, Ms Olsen managed to log 19.5km a litre, just slightly below her previous record of 20.9km a litre, set in Germany.
