NISSAN has unveiled a concept car with features that counter drink driving.

First, a highly sensitive sensor in the transmission shift knob is able to pick up the alcohol odour in the driver's perspiration. When the level detected is above a pre-determined threshold, the system locks the transmission, immobilising the car.

More 'sniffers' are located in the cabin. They trigger a voice alert if they sense the driver has had one too many.

The car also has a facial monitoring system. A camera on the dashboard is linked to a system that tracks the driver's state of consciousness through the eyes. When the system detects drowsiness, a voice and message alert is triggered via the navigation system. The seatbelt is also tightened.
