CAN supercar owners lead normal lives? Can they slurp noodles at a hawker stall with ease? Can they use their cars day in and out without chipping a nail or putting their back out? Can they go anywhere without drawing attention?
The low-slung Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera may not be as challenging to get in and out of as the Lotus Elise or the Porsche Carrera GT - prosperous individuals and damsels in little black numbers included - but one thing's for sure: You can't be low-key in this car.
The reason is rarity. There are only about 100 Lamborghinis on Singapore roads. And you are twice more likely to spot a Ferrari than a Raging Bull. So, expect lots of stares - from every quarter.
To find out for ourselves, we took an orange Superleggera with distinctive black livery - Lamborghini's newest baby to arrive and a rarity even among its breed - out for a day.
Oosh or noodles
The supercar set tends to congregate at chi-chi places with valets and air-con as basic prerequisites. But we drove to our favourite noodle stall for a hearty fix. Parking in the narrow street in front of the shophouse was not as hellish as we thought - thanks to the Superleggera's wide-angle reverse camera (with colour screen). And the stewed pork rib mee was worth the stares.
Park assistance
Even without the helpful rear-view camera, parking a Lamborghini is mostly painless.
For instance, attentive attendants at leading hotels are always at hand to welcome you and guide you to a spacious lot. One even moved a BMW 6-series convertible out of a prime lot to let us in. Life is indeed sweet in a Lambo.
Tight corners
The Superleggera is a lightweight Gallardo made for serious track work and long sweeping roads. It is a little unwieldy in the city. Its E-gear (a clutch-actuated semi-auto) allows it to be driven like a Camry (well, nearly) or an F1 car. But its transmission is far from smooth in the madding crowd. Can't wait till DSG makes its way to this Volkswagen Group-owned marque.
Despite its aversion to urban landscapes, the car excels in a number of things. It will slot itself into any opening in the lanes with utter ease, its turning radius is reasonably tight, and it will negotiate (most) spiral carpark ramps with aplomb.
Pick-up line
School runs are best made in innocuous MPVs. But picking up your children in a Lamborghini will make their day. The oohs and aahs from the other kids in the line chorus long after you've left. You can ferry only one child at a time though - even if the car offers 'emergency' rear bench seating.
One thing's for sure, your kid will never be late.
Shopping spree
No, you can't quite indulge in serious shopping in the Superleggera.
Not if you have a passenger anyway.
But that sexy pair of stilettoes from Prada, that bottle of Chanel No. 5, or a bouquet of lovely lilies should be no problem.
Working class
The Lambo is perfect for a journalist. Tight deadlines often send us scurrying about in between interviews. A fast car is obviously a boon. The only drawback of using a supercar on the job is that the interviewee may not give you the attention that you seek.
Oh, and forget about that year-end bonus if your car is flashier than your boss'.
