A SAFETY supervisor was fined $1,000 on Wednesday for smoking in the toilet of a Jetstar Airways plane.

Anbalagan Krishnan, 30, pleaded guilty to the offence while on board the budget carrier last Dec 3.

Complaining of a stomach ache, he went to the toilet and took a puff while in there, despite having been told it was a non-smoking flight.

A flight steward who detected the smell of cigarette smoke when Anbalagan walked past him after using the toilet, confronted him.

Anbalagan admitted to the offence only when he was asked a third time.

He could have been fined up to $5,000 or jailed up to one year, or both, for the offence.
