MORE people have been arrested for illegal gambling and betting activities here.

The number jumped by 58 per cent from 992 in 2007, to 1,566 people in 2008.

Police said: "Our laws on gambling are not targeted at people who play card games or other games of chance for social interaction, such as among family and friends."

Any person found guilty of gaming in a public place faces a fine of up to $5,000 and/or imprisonment for up to six months.

If convicted, owners or occupiers of places used as common gaming houses can be fined up to $50,000 and/or jailed for up to three years.
