ABOUT 100 tour and travel companies have been set up to support the integrated resorts (IRs), said Mr Lee Yi Shyan, Minister of State for Manpower.
The two IRs have hired 16,000 workers and 70 per cent of them are local hires, he said.
The IRs are expected to hire 20,000 workers in all by the time they are fully operational.
Madam Ho Geok Choo (West Coast GRC) asked if the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) planned to help ancilliary service providers, like those in laundry services, cope with a manpower crunch. They have trouble recruiting citizens and face limits on the number of foreigners they can hire, she said.
Mr Lee said the MOM is working closely with the IRs to pre-empt operational problems, and does not see this as an area of concern yet. He urged the companies to find ways to raise productivity, such as by using automation.
