Here he comes to save the day!

Nope, this isn't Mighty Mouse singing his usual tune, but Captain Amazing, Singapore's very own superhero from the Mighty Magic Factory.

And Captain Amazing, just like all superheroes, aspires to save the world, or in this particular case, primary school children from the evil known as 'fire safety and civil emergency preparedness' ignorance.

Quite a mouthful isn't it?

Since February this year, students in various primary schools were treated to Captain Amazing's 30-minute puppet show that taught them how to protect themselves better in situations involving lightning, fire and suspicious packages.

Commissioned by the National Fire Safety and Civil Emergency Preparedness Council (NFEC), some of the lessons learnt were to “stop, drop and roll” when in a room full of smoke and to “stay calm” and to “notify an adult if strange suspicious bags were spotted.

There will be a total of 60 shows performed.

In the show that AsiaOne attended at Greendale Primary School, the children, all between the ages of seven to nine, responded to Captain Amazing’s lessons with deafening squeals of excitement and eager participation.

Much of the children's applause and laughter went towards Captain Amazing's puppet friends, which included a brash, talking chicken and an orange “half bear, half pig” which bears a vague resemblance to Sesame Street’s Snuffleupagus.

“We incorporated puppets because we realised that children react very well to them,” said Ning, the creative director of the Mighty Magic Factory and Singapore's first professional female magician.

“They're a great way to share the education of these messages.

“We take our role as edutainers very importantly.”

When passion makes a difference

Ning, who has garnered much fame as the Magic Babe, confessed that much of the conceptualisation of the show stemmed from her love for kids.

“This is my way of giving back [to them],” quipped the bubbly beauty, who has once graced an FHM photoshoot.

Her passion for kids has also inspired her to put up another show, The Magic Within, with the Children's Cancer Foundation as its main beneficiary.

However, this babe with a heart does not perform, choosing to take a backstage role so that the other performers under her can shine brighter.

“No kid will know who I am, but that’s okay with me because seeing them laugh is already good enough.”

Now, who said that fire safety was boring again?
