IN RESPONSE to the report, 'Angry, young and over here' (The New Paper, Oct 27) on the rising inclination towards violence among Singapore youth, let me say that parents should be made responsible for their children's actions, and shoulder half the punishment when their children commit offences.

Delinquent youths are the result of parents failing to discipline and educate their children on what's right and what's wrong.

Parents in Singapore do not spend enough quality time with their children. Instead, they substitute love and attention with money.

While money is important, it can never replace quality time.

Many teens commit crimes not because they enjoy doing so, but because it is a way of getting attention from their parents and peers.

A major reason for the rise in teen violence is violent parents who often fight and argue at home. Children of violent parents will most likely be violent too.

Married couples should know that parenting is no easy task, and requires lifelong dedication and responsibility.

Couples planning to have children should attend courses on how to be good, effective parents and learn how to communicate well with their children.

They also should not forget to spend quality time with their kids.

What is the point of couples having more children to boost Singapore's birth rate if parents are unable to discipline their kids, resulting in them growing up to be criminals?
