Having multiple ear piercings, love bites and transforming school skirts into miniskirts.
According to contest judge Xiao Han, these are a few examples of how this year's Campus Superstar participants are showing disrepect to their school uniforms.
Campus SuperStar is a singing contest for students in Singapore.
The local lyricist, who has written songs for artistes like Stefanie Sun and Sandy Lam, also shared on her blog her encounter with a male auditionee who turned up in his school uniform with love bites dotted on his neck.
Thinking that he might have a skin condition, she asked him if there was anything wrong.
The boy shook his head firmly and said no.
"Are those love bites?" she proceeded to ask.
"Yes, those are love bites!" the male student answered without a trace of shame, shocking the judges on scene.
Xiao Han continued on her blog: "I mind, not because I'm a prude. It's just that students when wear their school uniforms in public, they are the representatives of the school. What does a whole neck full of love bites say about the school culture?
When Shin Min Daily News questioned her about her blog entry, the Golden Melody Award nominee stood by her views.
"His (referring to the student she blogged about) honesty should be lauded, but as a student wearing a school uniform, you are representing the school," she told the Chinese daily.
Apart from showing disrespect for their school uniforms, Xiao Han also told Shin Min that there were some Singaporean-Chinese auditionees who were adamant about not speaking their mother tongue.
"They're obviously Chinese but refuse to speak Mandarin. One even went so far as to deny that he's a Chinese, saying that only his father is a Chinese, but he isn't," she exclaimed.
Shin Min further reported that the organisers of Campus Superstar had sternly warned would-be participants not to turn up for auditions in school uniforms worn in an unkempt manner after its second season.
Students should be wearing their school uniforms as per the school rules and should not wear makeup nor paint their fingernails.
