Osaka - The operator of Japan's quake-hit nuclear plant said Sunday it would be difficult to restore power to the cooling system for reactor No. 2 by the end of the day, Jiji Press reported.

Engineers battling to avert a major meltdown at the stricken Fukushima facility had hoped to reconnect power to two reactors on Saturday but the work is taking longer than expected, partly because of water-spraying operations.

A spokesman for Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency however said that workers were still striving to restore power on Sunday if possible.
