Yip Pin Xiu has won Singapore's first gold medal of the Paralympic games.

She finished seven seconds ahead of Fran Williamson of Great Britian in the women's 50m backstroke (S3) in a time of 58.75 seconds. Xia Jiangbo of China took the bronze in one minute 7.97 seconds.

She had earlier set a new world record of 57.92 seconds during the heats.

The swimmer already has a silver medal and the world record from the 50m freestyle (S3) on Saturday.

Diagnosed with muscular dystrophy when she was a child, Yip's parents took her to swimming lessons to strengthen her muscles. She started training competitively two years ago.
