I REFER to the report "Halted: Sales of China-made frozen yoghurt" (my paper, Sept 18).

The discovery of the toxic chemical melamine in Sanlu infant formula sounded off the alarm on China-made food products.

The Chinese authorities conducted checks and tests on food items after the scandal broke, but that is a passive approach to address the problem of contaminated food in the country.

A water-tight system should be put in place to protect Chinese consumers as well as those in countries where the products are exported to.

Such a system should include clear labelling on the products of the following:

  • Chemicals present in the foods
  • The origin of the food products
  • The institutions which conducted the safety tests

I believe there are many procedures and precautionary measures that can be put in place to make consumers more aware of what they are buying.
