Praise for NKF's organ donor fund

MPs, kidney specialists and patients say it will improve lives and curb organ trading.

EXPERTS say the new $10 million fund for reimbursing kidney donors' costs is unlikely to create a surge in donations, but should succeed in discouraging organ trading.

Lawmakers, kidney specialists and administrators interviewed yesterday expressed this view of the Kidney Live Donor Support Fund, an initiative announced on Saturday by the National Kidney Foundation (NKF).

It pays for donors' health-care costs and loss of income after they have donated their kidneys.
