A WHEELCHAIR-BOUND businessman, convicted of fraudulent tax claims, was spared a jail term yesterday as a prison stay would probably worsen his medical condition.

Departing from the sentencing norm, District Judge Shaiffudin Saruwan instead fined Jagbir Singh $40,000 for making false claims for goods and services tax (GST) refunds.

Singh must also pay a penalty of $701,000, three times the amount he profited from his offences.
