Learn the LINGO

Before going to an exotic holiday destination, it pays to learn how to speak its foreign language

BREAKFAST turned nasty for secretary Sim Sui Sen in Madrid two years ago when she got pickpocketed while eating.

Luckily, she had been taking Spanish lessons and could shout 'socorro' - 'help' in Spanish - very loudly. In broken Spanish, she reported her loss to sympathetic policemen.

For those interested, foreign language study books are readily available here. In Borders, for example, there are over 2,000 such titles, priced from $20 to $50. Asian languages tend to be more popular.

At Kinokuniya in Ngee Ann City, these books take up less than 5 per cent of floor space, but make up over 10 per cent of total sales - more than self-help books but less than fiction. Its 3,000 titles range from $5 to $500.

And since the Teach Yourself series of language books - spanning 50 languages, from Afrikaans to Zulu - was launched here by distributor STP in April last year, over 35,000 copies have been sold.

The downside to learning the lingo, however, is that you'll understand any insults which may come your way, as Ms Sim, 27, experienced when she visited some villages. Just brush them aside, she says with a shrug.

For those planning a trip to an exotic place with few English speakers, get more out of the experience by learning the language beforehand.

It could come in handy in more ways than one, not just when you're haggling for a bargain.
